Solve the sponge peeling problem of a large shipbuilder with adhesives

Sealpilot has a wide variety of materials and resources to find the right solution for customers in the automotive, marine, engineering equipment, electrical, or other industries.

When it comes to marine use, you can't go wrong with our gaskets and adhesives. We found a perfect solution to create a tight seal between fuel and water tanks for the marine industry. This particular customer decided to use a standard adhesive around the polyethylene tank they were using.

Issue:

One thing that the customer didn't consider was how the adhesive of the sponge gasket was sealed to the material, which was a seemingly insignificant detail. As it turned out, the original adhesive did not seal well to the material, and the gasket material began to peel off.

A large shipbuilder came to us for a solution that could deliver better performance while meeting their requirements. We send an account manager to the customer's site to identify a new solution.

Solution:

Our account manager personally communicated with the customer. This helped us to learn more about the situation, and we introduced our customers to how adhesives bond to different substrates.

Based on this information, we provide a number of sample products and are able to test and evaluate the performance of each of the different combinations of adhesives and sponges. Finally, after offering several options in terms of performance and cost, a large shipbuilder chose 3M 9472 High Viscosity Transfer Adhesive.

After the start of production, large shipbuilders began receiving sponge gasket seals with new adhesives, and they found that the humid climate of their factories caused the adhesive to wrinkle. We recommend adding an HDPE yellow film liner to protect the adhesive from moisture.

At a meeting to solve the problem of adhesives, a second question was posed to us by a large boat manufacturer. They were looking for a new peel material, but it couldn't be compressed like a closed-cell sponge product. Luckily, we had a wide variety of materials on hand, and after some selection, they chose our 7620 plastic rubber as the ideal solution.
